So Fortune magazine have released their list of the top-growing companies in the world and sitting pretty at the top is the company responsible for the Blackberry – Research In Motion (RIM).

While Apple have seen sales of their iPhone device exceed all expectations and have become a major player in the smartphone market, RIM have also seen their business expand as they move towards the consumer market after having great success in their traditional business market. All told, profits have increased by over 80% in the last  3 years.

While the smartphone market is still relatively small compared to the regular mobile phone market, the signs of large growth are encouraging for the future of the industry. With more and more services becoming available for web browser-equipped handsets and more companies getting in on the action, it certainly looks set to take over in the next 5 years as the major source of revenue for a lot of phone manufacturers.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, there were also 5 Chinese companies in the top 100 list. Search engine Sohu.com, a challenger to Baidu and Google China, was placed in the top 10 and could well be one to watch in the competitive and lucrative Chinese market. How China continues to ride out the global economic situation is becoming a focal point for the rest of the world, especially since Chinese exports have declined in the face of reduced demand overseas.
