Apple takes on Microsoft head-to-head
Apple has brought the release date of its new operating system, Snow Leopard, forward in order to steal the march on Microsoft’s new Windows 7. Originally slated for a September release, Apple decided to bring the date forward at the eleventh hour.
With Windows 7 gaining many plaudits prior to its release, Apple could well be trying to steal the limelight and get their new offering out in the open with 2 months to spare before Windows 7 hits in October.
Microsoft’s last major consumer OS release, Windows Vista, ended up with a tarnished reputation to many people as it launched in a more buggy state than previous OSes, had high system requirements and caused numerous compatibility issues for some business and home users. Windows 7, on the other hand, looks to address these concerns.
With the market for operating systems hotting up with the rise of Linux-based systems in the consumer sector and Google planning their own assault on the low-end laptop and netbook markets with their Chrome OS next year, Apple and Microsoft may well have more to worry about by this time next year.
