£34billion high speed railway route decided

Network Rail have announced the preferred route for their planned high speed railway link between Scotland and south-east England. The proposed path will connect the cities of London and Glasgow, with spurs to connect Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester and Edinburgh as it follows the existing West Coast Main Line.

While the official go-ahead is still waiting on government studies covering topics such as costs and environmental concerns, the decision marks a milestone in the future development of the UK railway network. While plans for upgrades to the conventional rail system are well under-way, any plans for introducing high speed lines like those seen in the rest of Europe and Japan have been typically slow to gain momentum.

There are hopes that the reduced times to get from areas such as Manchester and Liverpool to London, down to just over 1 hour from 2-2.5 before, will help stimulate business and increase the level of big businesses investing in areas outside of London.
